Intelligent Design & Fatalism

In 1991, Dor Bahadur Bista, Nepal’s most known anthropologist and social scientist, published a book “Fatalism and Development” where he revealed that culture of fatalism has weakened the development in Nepal. Bista has termed “Bahunbhad” as the core culture of fatalism. But I believe fatalism in Nepal exist beyond the culture.

It is said that our civilization is way too ancient than some of the developed countries, and I am also a very firm believer in Darwinism (regarding the “adaptation” and “natural selection”); if both are true then how come we still practice the systems that hinders our development. Naturally the convenient and efficient measures should have got the priorities and the ill cultures and practices should have been left over, but that is not the case.

Looking at the bigger picture, coming out of fatalism, I have slowly started believing in Intelligent Design. Although there is no concrete hypothesis of it in the peer review, there are some big advocates of it. Wikipedia states that “Intelligent design is an argument for the existence of a God based on the premise that “certain features of the universe and of living things are best explained by an intelligent cause, not an undirected process such as natural selection.” Its leading proponents, all of whom are affiliated with the Discovery Institute, claim that intelligent design is a scientific theory that stands on equal footing with, or is superior to, current scientific theories regarding the evolution and origin of life.”

Observing my life and people associated with me as well as accounting for different co incidents, I have begun to feel that there is a designer with supernatural power who is writing the script of my life. If this hypothesis holds true I am starting to wonder how that designer writes the script. Do they write script like ‘Yes Chopra’, i.e. write a story first and let that roll on the film or like ‘Ekta Kapoor & Balaji Films Co.’, i.e. develop a framework of a story and make changes and amendments as life moves on.

If the designer is like ‘Yes Chopra’ than fatalism certainly exist; and if the designer is like ‘Ekta Kapoor’, than there is still room for improvement. One can work hard for bettering their life. At this moment I’m hoping the designer is Yes Chopra, I don’t feel like doing my dirty laundry, groceries, and cleaning dishes.

My lifestyle has changed

Recently I was in New York for five days, and what did I do there, nothing at all. Out of those five days I spent one night and 2 days in Baltimore, visiting my old roomies from SIUE. Besides that when in New York, I didn’t go to Time square, empire state building, statue of liberty, or any other tourist traps. I wanted to see the other side of the New York, a life that majority of city dwellers live.

After starting way early from New Orleans on Friday, I finally landed in La Guardia Airport NY around 2 pm. It was Shiva Ratri so I decided to go to the temple, last time I went to the temple in San Antonio on October 2006. I do believe in god, it’s just there are no temples in Lafayette. There is way less diversity in Lafayette, so I was really glad to see so many different races of people.

I woke up late Saturday and went out looking for bus to Baltimore from NYC. Traveling by China Bus is a very efficient and economical. It travels from China Town of one city to another and the fares are really cheap. The only problem that might arise is lack of good customer service as many of the bus operators/ representatives don’t even speak English. So I found line of buses and a Chinese lady escorted me to a bus. After ensuring that it leaves for Baltimore I asked her what time it leaves. She replied “1 pm”, not bad, it was 55 past 12 at that time. As I sat in the bus waiting and it was already past 1 pm, I heard the china women selling ticket to other customer saying that the bus leaves at 1:30 pm. The tickets were non refundable and I can’t argue in Chinese so I began to panic a little. Finally the bus started almost at 2 pm. However, when returning I caught a bus from DC to NYC in Baltimore, so there was no stoppage time.

Monday, the President’s Day, I decided to celebrate roaming around in Queens, specifically around Jackson height. I was glad that for a change I don’t have to drive now, subway and metro bus can take me anywhere I want. But riding subway made me drowsy and sick, maybe due to lack of oxygen and crowds. Although it was very chilly outside, I was happier walking with fresh air rather than riding a sub way. While roaming, I could barely hear English. There were Africans, Indians, Spanish, Chinese, etc everywhere. I used to turn my head sharply if I heard someone talk in English with American accent, which was so rare there. I even found lots and lots of people talking in Nepalese and passing by me without even looking at me, if that’s due to city life and larger Nepalese population, I am very happy with less diverse Lafayette with handful of Nepalese.

I have heard USA blaming other countries for piracy, but in the heart of US of A I found people selling DVD’s of movie just released couple of days back. Roaming around in Jackson Height flooded back the memories from Nepal. Although it’s predominantly Indian Community, I got very nostalgic seeing the similar café, restaurants, grocery stores, sari and jewelers etc. The movie theatre there always showed hindi movie, and other day it had shown “Basai”, a nepali movie for a day.

Tuesday I had flight back to New Orleans; although it was Mardi Gras in Louisiana but I won’t even get a piece of it as I would be landing very late. I really enjoyed the convenience and availability of different stuffs for my daily chores in NYC, but I can’t see myself living there someday, living in suburban areas has changed my life style. Being a Nepali from Kathmandu, I was surprised with myself complaining that NY was dirty, messy, congested, noisy, unsystematic…………………………………

Parade in Lafayette

I was really looking forward to the hype of Mardi Gras, but due to my personal reason I have to be out of the town. Well, Mardi Gras is on Feb 20, but the festivities have already started. Although I doubt Mardi Gras in Lafayette will be as wild as in New Orleans but I heard that the parade in Lafayette starts at 9am and by noon everyone is drunk.

To warm up for the Mardi Gras “king parade”, different parades have already started. I went to one of those yesterday. Basically there are floats towed by trucks and the people on the floats throw beads at you. Inspired by NakedNepali, I decided to pick up my camera and give my photography skills a shot. It didn’t take me long to realize that you not only need a good camera but also needs some skills to produce good pictures. However, I gave it my best shot.

What is your favorite color?

Yesterday one of friend asked me what my favorite color is and I had no clue about that. She further reiterated the question “my favorite color is blue, what’s yours?” I still had no answer to that so I asked her how do I know which is my favorite color. She suggested to me that the color of clothes that I wear might depict my color interest. I checked my closet and found that I have clothes of almost all the colors. I started to creep a feeling that there’s something wrong with me that I don’t have a personal favorite. I have heard people talk since they are kids about what color they like, someone had asked me this question long time ago and I had replied green, but my answer had to do more with my professional background than my personal interest. Green is the color of vegetation and I’m a biologist. But, I can’t say for sure that green is my favorite color. So I decided to talk with more people to find how they perceive color and finally explore my favorite.

The first person I talked also had blue as her favorite color. So I asked her how do you know and she replied me that that’s the color she wears. I asked her do you want to paint your walls blue and she said no. Second person I talked liked green; she not only wore green but would love to paint her walls green too but, she wouldn’t want to drive a green car. I asked couple of other people for their opinion but I couldn’t find the best logic that could point me towards what my favorite color should be. However, I deduced couple of conclusions from my conversations: 1). People have different color preferences for different settings even though they have one favorite color (for example, color of clothes, color of flowers, color of walls etc), 2). There is stronger opinion on what color you dislike than on what color you like (even I know I don’t want to be wearing a red wardrobe, or paint my wall red). I also felt that one likes a particular color based on how he/she responds to it. In general, blue or green color represent peaceful, yellow represents alert, red represents danger etc, so people respond to a particular color based on their nature as well as physical environment.

I concluded that one doesn’t need to single out a favorite color; they might not even have one. Besides, red and pink (perhaps purple too) I like to wear every color clothes. When I dream of a perfect scene I see blue skies and water, lush green vegetation, and light yellow flowers, so all those are my favorite colors.
