Intelligent Design & Fatalism
Posted: February 25, 2007 Filed under: Randomization of randomness 7 Comments »In 1991, Dor Bahadur Bista, Nepal’s most known anthropologist and social scientist, published a book “Fatalism and Development” where he revealed that culture of fatalism has weakened the development in Nepal. Bista has termed “Bahunbhad” as the core culture of fatalism. But I believe fatalism in Nepal exist beyond the culture.
It is said that our civilization is way too ancient than some of the developed countries, and I am also a very firm believer in Darwinism (regarding the “adaptation” and “natural selection”); if both are true then how come we still practice the systems that hinders our development. Naturally the convenient and efficient measures should have got the priorities and the ill cultures and practices should have been left over, but that is not the case.
Looking at the bigger picture, coming out of fatalism, I have slowly started believing in Intelligent Design. Although there is no concrete hypothesis of it in the peer review, there are some big advocates of it. Wikipedia states that “Intelligent design is an argument for the existence of a God based on the premise that “certain features of the universe and of living things are best explained by an intelligent cause, not an undirected process such as natural selection.” Its leading proponents, all of whom are affiliated with the Discovery Institute, claim that intelligent design is a scientific theory that stands on equal footing with, or is superior to, current scientific theories regarding the evolution and origin of life.”
Observing my life and people associated with me as well as accounting for different co incidents, I have begun to feel that there is a designer with supernatural power who is writing the script of my life. If this hypothesis holds true I am starting to wonder how that designer writes the script. Do they write script like ‘Yes Chopra’, i.e. write a story first and let that roll on the film or like ‘Ekta Kapoor & Balaji Films Co.’, i.e. develop a framework of a story and make changes and amendments as life moves on.
If the designer is like ‘Yes Chopra’ than fatalism certainly exist; and if the designer is like ‘Ekta Kapoor’, than there is still room for improvement. One can work hard for bettering their life. At this moment I’m hoping the designer is Yes Chopra, I don’t feel like doing my dirty laundry, groceries, and cleaning dishes.
i believe that is ‘Yash Chopra’ not ‘Yes Chopra’.
Ok, I believe underdevelopment in nepal is because of the belief in so called god…….the Intelligent Designer. People are so much dependent on god… so much that they pray Indra, the Rain god, for rain rather than thinking of building some irrigation canals. Its just an example……Belief in god has completely prevented neplese from thinking outside the continuation of their culture. The only thing they’ve learned is to follow their culture. probably this is the same reason why chimps remain chimps till today.
And my friend,Natural selection and Adaptation, when you talk about development, is not dependent only on time but also on the events like social movements and civilwar. So, do you think this says something about why our country is still under developed.
Lalit
Yes Lalit,
unlike in nature, in sociology ‘natural selection’ and ‘adaptation’ includes large array of other variables too. Actually I was trying to correlate cultural practices with ecological phenomenon.
But in political perspective, there seem to be no natural selection as same dumb and dumbers are re-elected and nepotism seem to be common natural selection criterion. And it’s only our “genius” leaders that have ovehauled the adaptability theory.
interesting post! I’m with you on Darwin. I noticed you like K.Spacey films, I loved “The shipping news”
Spacey was was also totally hilarious in his small role in “Working Girl” the Harrison Ford/ Melanie Griffith Pic.
Just writing to say “welcome back..” bro .. your site disappeared for a while ..what happened ??
Will comment more once I read what you gotta say …
I had planned to move to wordpress from blogger but decided not later, Anwesh still has me linked to the wordpress site, I’ll call him to fix that.
Thanks for checking.
Interesting observation! I’m currently reading/listening/investigating about religions, spirituality and the intelligent design stuff… Of course not as a professional, but just for my personal interest and curiosity. I think there is one single consciousness that dictates everything, and people call it with different names, but most popular one is GOD.
As for the script of life, I think everyone writes his/her own script (consciously or sub-consciously). Have you heard about a law called “the law of attraction”? I think this law dictates your, mine and everyones script. The basic law is very simple to understand — “You ultimately become what you think about”. You can watch The Secret for more…
